Bartholomew Ryan

Universidade Nova de Lisboa

Bartholomew Ryan is the coordinator of the CultureLab and a philosophy researcher at the Nova Institute of Philosophy (IFILNOVA) at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. His academic and creative works orbit around the central motif of ‘transformation’, which takes into account the masks, journeys and (multiple) identities that define the modern human condition. Amongst his various publications, his books include Faces of the Self: Autobiography, Confession, Therapy (co-editor, Vendavel, forthcoming 2018), Nietzsche and Pessoa: Ensaios (co-editor, tinta da china, 2016), Nietzsche and the Problem of Subjectivity (co-editor, de Gruyter, 2015), and Kierkegaard’s Indirect Politics: Interludes with Lukács, Schmitt, Benjamin and Adorno (Brill/Rodopi, 2014). He continues to write on the plurality of the subject and theatre of the self in philosophy and literature, focusing especially on writers such as Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Pessoa and Joyce. He is an integrated member of the research groups ‘Questions of Subjectivity: Literature and Philosophy’ and ‘Lisbon Nietzsche Group’ in the CultureLab; and is also a member of ‘HyperNietzsche’ and the ‘Experimentation and Dissidence’ Research Project at the Centre of Philosophy at the University of Lisbon. He was awarded the FCT Exploratory Grant (April 2014-March 2015) for the project ‘The Plurality of the Subject in Nietzsche and Pessoa’ in which he was the project leader.

He holds degrees from Aarhus University, Denmark (PhD, 2006); University College, Dublin (MA, 2002) where he was awarded the Professor Magennis Prize for first place in the year in European Philosophy; and Trinity College, Dublin (BA, 1999) in Philosophy and Political Science. He has taught a Masters/PhD course in Art and Experience on Modernist Theatre and Philosophy (2018) as well as “The Plural Subject in Joyce, Pessoa, Nietzsche and Kierkegaard” (2017) at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and “Theatre of the Self in Pessoa and Kierkegaard” (2013) at the Program in Literary Theory, Universidade de Lisboa. He was a lecturer at Bard College Berlin (2007-2011), and has also taught at the universities of Espirito Santo Brazil, Oxford and Aarhus. He has twice been a guest scholar at the Søren Kierkegaard Research Centre in Copenhagen and St. Olaf College, Minnesota. He was co-organizer and lecturer of the six-week International Summer University programme in Berlin four times which included “Prussia: Philosophy, Rebellion and the State (2011), “Montaigne and the Making of the Modern Self” (2009, 2008), and “Dostoevsky and the Roots of Terrorism” (2007).

He also writes and performs plays, and is the songwriter and leader of the international music project The Loafing Heroes.
